Mexico Imposes Up to 35 Percent Import Tariffs on Asian Nations

(MENAFN) Mexico officially implemented sweeping import duties Tuesday targeting nations without free trade partnerships, introducing levies reaching 35% on goods from major Asian economies including China, India, South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia, effective January 1.

The Ministry of Economy announced the policy overhauls tariff structures across 1,463 product categories spanning diverse manufacturing sectors—automotive components, textiles, clothing, plastics, steel products, home appliances, aluminum, toys, furniture, footwear, leather merchandise, paper and cardboard materials, motorcycles, and glass items.

Officials justified the protective measures as essential for preserving approximately 350,000 domestic jobs in vulnerable industries such as footwear production, textile manufacturing, apparel creation, steel fabrication, and automotive assembly. The ministry framed the initiative as advancing the nation's "sovereign, sustainable and inclusive reindustrialization in strategic sectors of the Mexican economy."

The Mexican Congress greenlit the tariffs earlier this month, clarifying the duties don't single out particular nations but rather bolster industries deemed vital to national economic interests.

Mexican authorities project the tariff framework will boost domestic content within production supply chains by 15%, stimulating increased local manufacturing and encouraging businesses to substitute imported materials with domestically-sourced alternatives.

Government forecasts predict the strategy will generate 1.5 million new employment opportunities while elevating domestic investment levels to approximately 28% of gross domestic product (GDP).

China has strongly condemned the trade restrictions.

On December 11, a China's commerce ministry representative criticized the tariffs and demanded bilateral negotiations.

"China has always opposed unilateral tariff increases in all their forms and urges Mexico to correct its misguided practices of unilateralism and protectionism as soon as possible," they said.
