Wildfires eat away Arab nations causing big damages

(MENAFN) Wildfires continued to sweep through five Arab countries on Wednesday, consuming vast stretches of forests and agricultural land amid an ongoing heat wave.

In Iraq, a major fire broke out Sunday evening in the forests of Halabja province in the northern Kurdish region, destroying hundreds of hectares of land and severely damaging pastures and grasslands across six villages, according to local reports.

The flames killed dozens of animals and birds and forced beekeepers and livestock farmers to evacuate their homes. The fire originated near three villages in the mountainous area of Halabja and spread to six more, with dozens of civil defense personnel working tirelessly to control it.

Halabja Civil Defense Director Brig. Gen. Abedin Abdulrahman said the fires “burned large forest areas, as strong winds hindered firefighting efforts despite the arrival of reinforcements.”

He added that more than 5,000 dunams (around 1,235 acres) of forests and orchards were destroyed, farms in six villages were devastated, and two local residents lost their lives.

“After major efforts, the fire has been brought under control,” Abdulrahman said. “We are monitoring the area closely to prevent similar incidents from recurring.”

Halabja Governor Nukhsha Nasih confirmed Wednesday that about 5,000 dunams of farmland were affected. She noted that delays in containing the fire were caused by insufficient firefighting equipment, the challenging terrain, and harsh weather conditions.
