TikTok to take down moderation positions as it shifts to AI
A company spokesperson explained the restructuring, saying: "We are continuing a reorganization that we started last year to strengthen our global operating model for Trust and Safety, which includes concentrating our operations in fewer locations globally."
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has criticized the decision. John Chadfield, CWU National Officer for Tech, argued: "TikTok workers have long been sounding the alarm over the real-world costs of cutting human moderation teams in favor of hastily developed, immature AI alternatives."
He also noted that the cuts were revealed "just as the company's workers are about to vote on having their union recognized."
TikTok defended the move, saying it would "maximize effectiveness and speed as we evolve this critical function for the company with the benefit of technological advancements."
The job losses will affect employees in London and extend to hundreds more across Asia. Those impacted will have the option to apply for internal openings.
The news comes as the UK enforces tougher online safety standards under the new Online Safety Act, which carries penalties of up to 10% of a company’s global revenue for failing to comply.
At the same time, TikTok has rolled out expanded parental controls, though it remains under scrutiny as UK regulators have launched a "major investigation" into the platform.
